Computer mediated communication is unique and is easier and flexible to use in this modern era. As learners nowadays have acces to modern technology which can facilitate teaching and learning.

Synchronous learning can be through Google Meet and Asynchronous learning can be used as face to face learning, uploading of slides, videos, diagrams and so forth.

Both Learning Activities can be used to cater the different learners.

  1. Computer mediated communication connects everyone in the whole world. It can be synchronous and asynchronous as we can mediate through various modes of communication like emails, YouTube videos goggle meet’ zoom etc. Furthermore, its flexible and suitable to the user at their convenience
  2. Synchronous is learning though implemented of online teaching through google meet, teams, webmer etc where learners are engaged with their facilitator and clear their doubts.
Asynchronous mode can be implemented through learning packages posted in the moodle system or any other social media where students can access this at their suitable time within the timeframe set .
  3. Use synchronous where the online course should be suitable for all types of learners in relation to the particular place they reside where network is also boosted.

• Provided the materials and internet connections are in good condition then this learning and teaching technique will be much more efficient

• For synchronous I’d set up a group discussion forum, zoom meeting. For asynchronous environment I’d give out projects or essay writing provided with the due date with ample time

• Asking for feedbacks from the students, making sure everyone’s in the same page and helping in avoiding further distractions.

  • What in your view makes computer-mediated communications unique from a teaching perspective, or is it just old wine in new bottles?
From a teaching perspective computer mediated communications is unique only to those who are computer literate. For students in the rural areas, operating a computer is such a big deal because they are not used to it everyday like those students in the urban areas.

  • How would you implement the learning activities in both synchronous and asynchronous environments?
I would implement synchronous to those who can afford or to those who are always active whereas for asynchronous activities can be recorded and given to them with the due dates.

  • What strategies will you use to maintain your teaching presence throughout the course?
I will make sure that I’m with my students throughout the course. Providing constructive and timely feedbacks to my students, create a chat group for openly discussion of ideas.

Computer mediated communication is unique as it requires technology and devices that enables sharing of information to generate responses and feedback that are faster and easier. Now, snchronous teaching and learning can be achieved thru virtual classrooms; zoom, video conferencing etc. while asynchronous teaching and learning is done through uploaded videos, discussion forums, assignments( online text and offline), chats, quizes etc. A teaching presence is maintained by allowing learners do things on their own through guided instructions to build their sense of learning, build links and enabling environment/community. Also by allowing learners share resources and information through guided instructions by the e-tutor/ online facilitator.

You are right but these must either be synonymous and asynchronous but requires guided and not confusing instructions that aid learning for all learning outcomes to be achieved.

This is correct. Learning must also be fun

Yes that’s true.
I relate to the children in the village during the lockdown, most of them had to climb tall trees and up hills in order to get networks and have their zoom sessions.
Just sad to witness such things especially if they have a zoom sessions in the night

Hi Elenoa (@ekoroidimuri) - You have made an interesting observation concerning connectivity issues and the timing of synchronous activities (after dark sessions)—this is something we need to consider when scheduling real-time activities, especially for low-bandwidth learners. :clock1030: :last_quarter_moon_with_face: :computer:

Computer-mediated communications is unique from a teaching perspective as it is a new way of interacting with our students using technologies as the medium of communication.
I would implement the learning activities in both synchronous and asynchronous environments by conducting zoom lesson for those who are able to connect at the scheduled time and record the lesson and later post on viber for those students who are unable to connect at the scheduled time.
To maintain our teaching presence throughout the course I would use video and audio more generally and post through class viber.

  • I can say that it just old wine in new bottles, for computers have been part of learning for some years now. But as the years passed, there have been a lot of changes to technology with the tech-updated generation nowadays will make learning easier and enjoyable.

  • For synchronous, there will be zoom classes conducted and for asynchronous, pre-recorded videos or the zoom links will always be available for students who miss the zoom session.

  • Always available online and try to respond to student’s emails or enquiries and also replying to forum posts and discussions.

The main design differences are that the content is primarily text based rather than oral(although increasingly video and audio are now integrated. The online discussion is mainly asynchronous rather than synchronous, and the course content is available at any time from anywhere with an Internet connection.

Use of zoom, google meet and other relevant applications to take classes can be good examples of synchronous learning while the use of learning packages and posting it online so that students are able to access and go over it at their time is an example of asynchronous learning.

Participating in the student discussion forums, modeling proper discussion, adding your perspective on each topic, and responding to student’s questions would show your students that you care about them and that you are there to support them.

a.) From my point of view, computer mediated communications is a little bit different compared to the usual teaching in terms of the resources used, a digital device is required for computer based communication and that also comes at a cost and since it is online, the course timing can be flexible and it also allows teachers to be more creative when explaining a concept such as portaying images, using powerpoints and videos.

b.) Implementing learning activities in a synchronous environment can best be done verbally in video live online classes using certain apps.In an asynchronous environment, learning activities can be carried out in the form of forum discussions or as assignments that students can do at their own timings and then the teacher can provide feedback as needed.

c.) The most important strategy i believe that is most important to maintain teacher presence is to continuously communicate to the students and giving students assurance that help is provided if they are confused, constant emails related to course, giving course feedbacks and any new updates are some ways that can help.

Computer Meddiated communication is one of a kind within the sense that it is effective, fast and not contracted by the bounds of time or location. One of the leading points of interest of usually its flexibility. You’ll communicate with anybody, anytime, anywhere. Online learning exercises happen within the same-chronological time outline. Learning exercises may be executed in synchronous mode by means of moment informing, videoconferencing and chat whereas in offbeat mode can be executed through online discourses, and assignments that lock in understudies in learning at their possess pace, on their possess time. A solid online educating nearness makes for a solid online learning involvement and a sense of community for your understudies. Through the plan of your online course, assistance of talk, and coordinate instruction, you build up your online instructing nearness.

It facilitates interaction between the teacher and students, and also between students themselves. It also fosters the negotiation of meaning. Compared to face-to-face communication, mediated communication engages fewer senses, transmits fewer symbolic cues (most mediated communication does not transmit facial expressions) and is seen as more private

Computer – mediated communication is a potent instrument that has altered the methods of people’s day-to-day life, work, and learning. It implicates the communication amongst humans utilizing computers to link to one another.
Web conferences through question-and-answer sessions, polls and surveys can be more synergistic than video consultation.
For upholding teacher presence engaging in dialogue is vital, which allows learners to enthusiastically partake during the lesson.

Using computers in education is the way to go for the future of education. It becomes unique as it allows learners to use flexible times for learning unlike the traditional methods of having fixed hours and classroom setups for teaching and learning. The use of many technologies like zoom and google meet allow a great way to setup synchronous classes which assists in clarification on certain topics. The issue with synchronous classes is with scheduling as setting a fixed time doesn’t really allow all students to be available or may also face issues with device compatibility or connectivity and even some cases on how to use the specialized apps. With google classrooms and moodle like platforms, asynchronous lessons can surly be carried out, giving their own time to do assigned work. Issue with asynchronous classes is that there is no guarantee on if the person of interest is actually doing the work or it is being done by someone else. To maintain my teaching presence throughout the course, I would design activities that will make students more involved like having kahoot quizzes, using google forms for activities, grading students’ activities and providing feedback to the work done.

Computer-based communication is a collective term for various forms of human communication through networked computers, synchronous or asynchronous, and single, single, text, audio, and / or video messages and include multiple exchanges. Computer-based communication overcomes geographical barriers to communication and enables collaboration through long-distance communication. People can share, save, edit, send, and copy written documents. You can send data and messages instantly, easily, inexpensively, and over long distances.
I would prefer to offer both learning activities synchronous and asynchronous because when all students study together, they feel a stronger sense of community and connection with their classmates. They are more engaged in their learning with a greater sense of collaboration.
The personal relationship between the student and the teacher creates a stronger sense of community and reduces the feeling of isolation. A more sensitive exchange between students and teachers also prevents misunderstandings and misunderstandings.
I believe that we need to be more enthusiastic, creative, use technology implementation with the use of audio and visual inputs, or guest speakers will undoubtedly help increase your classroom presence by making your education more attractive. Equally important is building your own growth mindset so that you can continue to improve your education. Secondly, a supplement to paper-based media, audio and video recordings and the telephone, systems traditionally available to overcome the separation of teaching and learning which characterizes distance education.

Computer-mediated communication (CMC) is a powerful instrument that has altered people’s everyday lives, work, and learning. It facilitates communication with individuals all around the globe. CMC activities may be asynchronous, such as composing emails or publishing comments to an online discussion board, or virtual synchronous, such as discussions conducted in chat rooms. Computer technology advancements have offered new chances for language learning that are not available in regular schools. Many venues have been created to aid with language acquisition.

Computer-mediated communication has overcome the old school method of teaching, example printing certain copies of notes, distributing it and a must present in a class for attendance purpose. Communication has become more flexible with computer in terms of students corresponding via email or a learning platform such as moodle.
As far as learning activities are concern, asynchronous approach on moodle, we create discussion forum, an interactive topics for discussion and inputs from various students enrolled in that unit. Also we have submission platform where students can submit assessments with time frame. “Teams” and “Zoom” applications proved to be very helpful during previous lockdowns for us to allow synchronous approach to conduct online teaching session and engaging with students for online assessment as well.
Maintaining teaching presence is one of the very important things we need to keep students on their toes. Synchronous open discussion on moodle, collaborative projects and sharing experience that interest them will keep students motivated towards the lecture. The whole course should be well address to students, its objectives and learning outcomes should be well addressed to students. As a lecture, one should make students feel his presence by responding to his emails or reviews on discussion forum. Synchronous learning environment should be created for better transfer of knowledge from a lecturer to student.
