  1. good leadership and management skills to lead and operate the school effectively
  2. a person who have the mission and vision for an open school in alignment with the national vision of education
  3. good understanding about the open school in terms of a policy, curriculum, funding, technology and OER
  4. good interpersonal skills and excellent communication skills
  5. innovative and good advisory skills

 A manager/principal should be able to manage the school’s resources, including financial, human, and physical resources

These are some of the competencies for manager or principal have according to my experience as a school principal:

  1. Good relationship with teachers, students, parents, guardians, communities and the Department of Education.
  2. Leadership skills
  3. Be a good listener.
  4. Be a neutral person.
  5. Good communication skills
  6. Be visible.
  7. Be sensitive and empathetic.

These are some of competencies managers/Principals should have in running an effective school.

Yes Banjo, the manager of a school should have multiple competencies. Perhaps we should suggest some of the competencies in our discussions, for the benefit of others. Teamwork is certainly very important.

  3. Budgeting
  4. Curriculum implementation

As a leading figure, the school manager should have the following competencies;

i. leadership competent - decision making, negotiation, project management, etc
ii. Financially competent; develop budget proposals, can read, understand and analyze budgets and transactions well
iii. Technologically competent; to use and operate ICT devices and accessories well
iv. Competent in both the local language and English language verbal and written form of communication
v. Competence in counselling

In my opinion, Managers of an Open school should have the following competencies.

  1. Strong leadership skills. Managers should be able inspire, motivate, encourage and mobilize followers or workers willingly to actualize set goals and objectives.

  2. Communication skill: Managers should be able to express, pass, communicate the goals and objectives of the school to followers without ambiguity. Strong communication skill is needed to achieve cohesion, orderliness and oneness especially in a large Open school

  3. Conceptual knowledge. Leaders or managers of an Open school needs a bit of conceptual knowledge to pilot the day to day affairs of the institute

  4. Managerial skill… The importance of managerial skills for managers of Open school cannot be over emphasized. They need to be prudent, judicious in spending and disbursing funds aimed at achieving set goals and objectives.
